I believe in a flexible approach to guitar and ukulele lessons, so you or your child can learn anything from pop to jazz to rock to classical. No matter what style of music a student plays, it’s important to foster a life-long love of music.

So what can you expect to learn?

  • How to use your hands in a way that is comfortable and natural. I have a lot of experience working with young beginners and students learn right away how to play simple songs stress-free, without tying their fingers into knots

  • Songs by your favorite bands and artists. Some examples are Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Bille Eillish, but there are too many to list here. I have a huge amount of songs in my library for guitar lessons, but what if you want to learn a song that I’ve never played? My classical training helps me quickly work out the chords and notes for a song that makes sense for you.

  • The fundamentals of music presented in a way that makes sense. Learning the fundamentals of music is important, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Students learn to be excellent musicians in addition to being great guitar players.

Where do lessons take place?

I travel to students' homes for lessons, making it easy for you to fit guitar/ukulele lessons into your schedule without having to deal with the hassle of traffic.

Who should take lessons?

Lessons are designed for kids and adults who have busy lives. Meeting at your home lessons allows you to schedule lessons when it works best for you, and leaves more time for practicing and playing.

All that's needed is a desire to learn. You don't need to have any experience with music to start learning guitar or ukulele.

The goal is to remove as many barriers as possible to learning so that you can start playing as quickly as possible.

How are lessons structured?

The most common set-up is to have a lesson once a week for 30 minutes per lesson. Different arrangements are possible for joint sibling/family lessons. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

About Me

My name is Brian Riggs and I've been teaching guitar lessons for the last 10 years. In that time it's been great to see all the progress that my students have made. Teaching guitar lessons in an amazing city like Chicago has given me the opportunity to meet many great people and share my love of music and the guitar.

I have a degree in classical guitar performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and have a lot of experience performing as a classical guitar soloist, and in groups playing a wide range of styles.

My students play music by just about every artist you can imagine. Some of my favorite musicians/bands include Wilco, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and the White Stripes (among many, many others).

“Incredibly well-versed in music theory. Works well with children, tailoring his lessons to the specific interests of the student, and is easy to understand, weaving in an amazing amount of theory without you even knowing it. Highly recommended!”- Jim R.

“I have seen substantial growth in my guitar playing due to Brian's patient, enthusiastic, supportive and insightful teaching. Lessons are rigorous but fun so you learn a lot but it never feels like work. Brian will allow you to pursue the style of music that excites you and his vast knowledge of music makes him capable of providing excellent instruction no matter what type of music that is. If you’re beginner or someone who's been playing for awhile but wants to take their playing to the next level- call Brian!”-Karen H.

“He really works with his interests and skills and has a really great way with kids.Having been through some torturous music lessons when I was a child, it is truly inspiring to see how much my son looks forward to their time together.” -Allison Y.
